A Fun Day
My high school friend Kelly, her husband and 3 kids are moving to a new Apartment downtown. I said I would take her two older kids (Julia and Amy) for the day so they could concentrate on the packing. I'm so glad I did b/c we had such a blast. Her girls are such angels and all the kids played so well together all day I don't think one tear was shed. It was such a joy. We all went for a walk, read books and baked cookies. I managed to snap some photos of all the cuties playng, Enjoy!!

Exactly Two Years Ago...
Two years ago today, My Baby girl at 10 months old had to undergo open heart surgery. It was the absolute worst day of my life, yet taught me so much. It is AMAZING how far we have come since then. Today we are going to celebrate Breanna being here and being well. Here are some of my journal exerpts from this day and the following days that year. I hope no one else ever has to go through their child having any sort of major surgery. But if they do I'm here and my shoulders are big.
"It is hard for me describe as a mother the feelings and emotions that I have had about my baby daughter having to endure major heart surgery. It has been the first thought in my mind every morning when I woke up for 4 months now, "how am I going to handle this?". I can't believe that the day is finally here. I'm scared, sad, and angry all at the same time. I ask God, "why do we have to have so many more worries than normal people, it's just not fair. " I've created a timeline for the day that, even though you are doing great now, I'll never forget as long as I live. I remember waking up to the sound of rain on the roof in the dark at 4am as I looked over at you sleeping beside me, and I said a little prayer.....
.4am : woke up for last feeding, and I couldn't go back to sleep! 7am: We got out of bed, got everyone dressed and showered.8am: tried to give Breanna a last feeding of apple juice from a bottle, she refused, and played happily on the floor with her toys and we hugged and kissed her as much a possible.9am: left for MMC, said goodbye to Trevor and Gammie, Trevor said, " Have a fun day at the hospital Breanna!"9:30 am: arrived at MMC, checked in at admitting desk and met Lori Hafner, Dr Quinn's nurse. She showed us around the PICU1030 am: arrived at ASU, checked in and got a beeper.1100 am escorted to a room in ASU where we would wait until they were ready to take Breanna away for surgery.1130 am met with anestethiologist and signed consent. He promised us you would not feel a thing!1200 noon, you were hungry and cried, we were still waiting and were getting very anxious, we cried too! Finally you fell asleep1230 the anestthiologist came to take you away for surgery. We said our goodbyes, I love yous and cried. You were sleeping peacefully, awoke for a minute and looked confused as they carried you away. 1pm Josh and I had lunch in the cafeteria and then headed up to th PICU waiting room. We kept ourselves busy on the internet and reading magazines. Our stomachs were in knots! 315 pm Lori called the waiting room, you were off the heart lung machine and everything had gone beautifully, they were trying to get you off the breathing tube and bring you back to the PICU in about 30 mins.400 pm Dr Quinn appeared to talk with us. He said, "everything is fine, the breathing tube is out, come with me..." (he was a man of few words!). 405 pm: when we first saw you in the PICU, room 1024 you looked ok!! No breathing tube! You breathing was a little labored and you were heavily sedated. You had been given 1mg of morphine after surgery. You had an oxygen tubhe in your nose, heart monitor wires, a chest tube, an arterial line, and an IV in your foot. We rubbed your head and kissed you. Josh felt a little lightheaded and left for some orange juice. Suddenly you stopped breathing for a moment. The color started to fade from your face, I almost passed out. Suddenly you took a breath and we kept you stimulated for the next few hours. 6pm We went to the cafeteria for dinner, when we came back you were sleeping comfortably and your breathing was better. 730 Grammie, Grandpa and Trevor came to visit only for a few minutes. Trevor held your hand and then then they had to go. We needed to keep you calm. 930 pm We left for home, I couln't feed you tonight and we needed some rest!!!We woke up 3 times during the night and called Nicole, your nurse to see how you were doing. She said you were doing great!""The hardest day was the day after surgery. You seemed so sick and in pain! I stayed in the hospital 28 hours straight with you and I was worrying constantly . It was very stressful and took a big toll on all of us. There were many different doctors, nurses and residents in and out of the unit. It was always a flurry of activity. I was able to feed you again but it was hard beacuse of all the tubes and wires. You had to get medication via Iv and orally. you didn't like the taste of some of them and threw up. I felt so bad for you, but you were so strong! I remember that I went to dinner that night feeling really stressed, I was almost shaking. You seemed so fragile, I was so worried about what might go wrong at the next moment. Sitting by your side all those hours in the hospital was really getting to me, and I knew the night was approaching. After having just that small dinner break, however, I felt better and was able to return to your room in the PICU with a little more energy.A mere 29 hours after the surgery you were sitting up and playing with your toys, AMAZING! I stayed that night to feed you even though I only got a few hours of sleep. The next day Daddy came back and you and I slept together in your hospital bed for a long time. There was still fluid draining from your chest tube so it looked like we were going to have to spend another night in the PICU. You were feeling better, so I fed you some baby food (bananas) and you nursed and went to sleep. After watching the telethon for hurricaine Katrina victims, we decided to go home that night for some much needed rest. When we drove by the gas station we were flaberghasted! The price of gas had gone up from $2.69 to $3.77 in just the two days that you had been in the hospital! The next day we came back and Dr Quinn said that your chest tube could come out! Then Dr Donnelly, the cardiologist, came back and did an Echocardiogram to check for fluid around the heart. He said that everything looked great, and that you could go home! The nurse said that you were only one of two patients that got discharged directly from the PICU in 4 years! You are such a stong and amazing little girl. Everyone said how cute (and flexible) you were. After gathering our things, we took the wheelchair ride out to the car. We were going home!!!! Now we could put all of this behind us and get on with being a normal family again. I couldn't wait to plan all kinds of fun things for the fall. After we got home, we pretty much slept for 2 days straight! We were all sooo tired! "

Doctor visit
Wow, between the three kids, I feel like we are at the doctors office once a month! Trevor saw Michelle an nurse practitioner today for his 5 year well visit. She asked him all kinds of questions and did a very thorough exam and evaluation of Trevor. Trevor weighs 41 lbs and is 43 3/4 inches tall. That puts him around the 66 percentile for weight and 75th percentile for height. His fine motor skills could use some tuning (but what boy's don't?) but aside from that he passed with flying colors. Vision, hearing, speech and gross motor skills are perfect! Next, came the part Trevor was worrying about and crying about all day-the SHOTS! He had to get three, and what did my brave little boy do? He stuck his arm right out and only said, OUCH," as the nurse gave him each one. He was amazing, I was so proud of him! Afterwards he got a special toy and McDonalds for dinner. Now--we are definately ready for school!

The Best Big Brother in the Whole World
Trevor is just and incredibly sweet, helpful boy. He defiantely has his moments, but most of the time he is helping out his sister or me. Today, he held Breanna's hand and helped her come inside and outside and helped lift her up to the piano bench so she could play. He even showed her how to play softly so she wouldn't wake Lucas. He is always spontaneously saying, "I love you Mom". Yesterday he picked me a flower while I was at work and there it was sitting in water in a sesame street cup when I got home. Sweetness..... I love little boys:)

Today, I also had a meeting with Breanna's caseworker. I am going to start the process of getting an in-home-support person for Breanna. Some people have been getting it with kids as young as 3-31/2. I know some people are against it, but I don't see how it can hurt. When you figure that it may take her 10 times longer to learn things how can it hurt to have a little extra one-on-one attention. I know ultimately it is MY job to make sure she learns things, but I'm GOING to need a little help. Never say No to extra help, right? Good advice for any Mom. Anyway, I'm sure it is going to be a hard process learning the results from these evaluations how far behind she REALLY is, but It's reality, right? Also, I will have someone there that can take her to extra therapies like swimming and therapeutic horseback riding when I just can't possibly fit one more thing into my schedule with work and 3 kids. I hope it goes well.

Preschool visit
Today we visited the Shooting Stars preschool program that Breanna will be attending starting September 5th. Breanna made herself right at home playing with all the toys, stealing pens and making friends. I am so excited about the program and what it will mean for her development. In Fact, this is the best I've felt about any program she has been in. Maybe it is just experience, but I know what Breanna needs and I think this is going to be great:) Enjoy the pictures from her school. The name fits....

10 days and counting...
10 days until my baby gets on that bus. I'm so excited, but so anxious all at the same time. The world has changed so much since I was a kid in school. I lay awake at night worrying about all the things I SHOULD be worried about. What if he gets picked on?, what if he doesn't know where to go and gets lost before his teacher even knows what he looks like? What if he doesn't like school?, What if something happens to him? He's grown so much even just this summer, I know he is ready for school. I just have to find a way to let go. Just this morning he sat up at his very own table and wrote his name without anyone telling him what the letters were! I'll post a picture of that later. As nice as it will be to have that break with one less child at home during the day, I'm going to miss him so much. He's like my best friend....

Time to get Organized...
With school starting in just over a week, I took the opportunity this weekend to just hang around the house and re-organize. Let me tell you, it is a ton of work organizing a family of five! I started going through clothes to make sure we are prepared for the colder weather. Breanna needs a raincoat, and Trevor needs some sneakers and some Pajamas. I haven't gone through all my attic stuff for Lucas yet, but not bad, we have most everything we need. I took a few trips out to Walmart to get some bins and some of the school supplies TRevor needed. Josh and I both worked on changing around and reorganizing the TOYROOM! We moved the couch and the kids table so it is much roomier. They can actually see their toys now to play with them. We moved their little table out by our big dinner table so they could enjoy snacks and arttime etc. I'm a real big proponent of fostering independence in my kids and so far they have been doing so much better after this change! They get out toys by themselves when they want to play with them, they can get themselves healthy snacks and eat right at their own little table or do coloring etc... IT has been great, and we got alot of work done, but of course the work is never done, the laundry still needs tending to:)

Ready for School!
Yesterday, We all took part in the principal's tour of the Blue Point Primary School. Mrs. Helms, the principal guided us through each classroom in the school. The place looks AMAZING! Each classroom was filled with books, workbooks, crayons, games, puzzles and just about anything a kindergartener would need for a day of complete fun. I was so excited, I wish I could go back to Kindegarten (I wish as kids we could have really appreciated all the carefree fun we got to have at this time in our lives). We learned where TRevor's classroom would be with Mrs. Lindholm (There are 5 kindergarten classrooms) and where the gym/cafeteria, art, library and music rooms were. Trevor will have art, music and library time once a week and gym twice a week. More importantly, we got learn where the BATHROOM was and play on the playground. We are one step closer to school -12 days and counting........

Dentist Visit
Today, Breanna and Trevor had their 6 month dental visits. Breanna totally amazed me. After all the fuss she puts up at home about brushing her teeth, she just sat quietly in the chair while the hygenist cleaned her teeth, flossed, and applied the fluoride treatment! Amazing! Further proof that I think it's just me--she fights me on everything. Getting dressed, brushing hair etc... I think It's probably a mother daughter thing.

Favorite time of Year
Fall, by far is my favorite time of year, I can't believe it is fast approaching. Tonight it is going to be in the 40s! Usually I anticipate the start of the season, the cool air, picking apples, raking and playing in leaves. This year, I just don't want to let go of summer, it seems like it just started. I love the carefree days when I don't need to shower or go anywhere and we can just play on the backyard on the swingset or pool. Pretty soon, we will be back to schedules, and SCHOOL! I don't know if I'm ready......

Time to go
Irene and the girls are leaving already this Wednesday. As chaotic as it has been with all the kids, I'm going to miss them. It's nice having a sister to hang out with, to talk shop with and to break up the monotony of the day-to-day. I'm so glad I got to spend this time with them-you never get closer to someone as when you are living under the same roof! I got to know my nieces daily schedules and all their likes and dislikes. Trevor and Lily finally made friends. Irene and I got to shop, watch scrapbooking and eat whoopie pies. It was fun. I hope that they get the rest, help and peace and quiet at Mom's house that they deserve. Best of luck to the them as they make their way down to VA and find a house and get settled. I can't wait to visit already:) We love you guys! Pics of the visit to follow......

What a night!
I think we needed about 20 more hands tonight. There wasn't one moment fom 5-8 pm that all 5 kids weren't crying all at once. It was exhausting. Breanna cried and yelled so hard when I put her to bed that I thought she might throw up. In fact I'm holding a crying baby right now. I only laugh to keep from crying. Lord, give me patience.....

We are Baaack! We had an incredible time in NH and at Storyland. My only complaint is is that the time went by to fast! It is definitely alot of work traveling with three small children. But, when Josh and I are old and gray and having nice quiet dinners and sitting in the hot tub by ourselves, we will miss this, the kids being little that is. There is no feeling quite like the sight of their smiling faces and ohh's and Ahh's at a theme park. Our favorite moments:
- Josh saying, "Give MEE 10 bucks and I haul that old rusty van away." (You had to be there)
- Route 302 traffic (reminiscing from my childhood)
- Breanna pushing me away at Friendly's as if to Say, "Mom get your OWN ice cream!"

Last Day
Here are some pictures from Breanna's last day at the Toddler Program. We took a picture with Liz (ST), Barb and Tracy (OT,PT) and Kris (DT). Thank you so much girls! Breanna loved the program and it has become like a second home for her. Breanna has learned and grown so much this year. We will miss you:)

Onward and Upward
Tommorrow is Breanna's last day at the Woodford's toddler program. I can't believe it's been a year since she started. What incredible progress she has made. She is going to be a preschooler! I'm so grateful to all her therapists for loving Breanna like their own. We are going to miss them! Tommorrow we are going to have a little party and bring them some flowers. Onward and upward.....

Vacation Week
Josh has been off on Vacation all this week and we have been having a blast. Jeff returned to Germany on Monday so Irene and the girls have been staying with us. I'm so glad they are staying with us- I love spending the time with Irene and my nieces. We watched scrapbooking on QVC yesterday, my favorite!! Irene and the girls have been managing so great, and things aren't as hectic as I thought they would be with the 5 kids. I'm so proud of them. Every house needs TWO women:) In fact today, for about one millisecond we had all 5 kids sleeping. We had to marked the milestone with a picture. From time to time I get a little anxious about my own kids. I'm just so afraid of someone getting hurt, I'm so aware of how little time it takes for a child to get into trouble! Life can change in a millisecond.
Josh has been spending a lot of time with Trevor this week and he is just eating up all the one-on-one time. Yesterday was a BEAUTIFUL day and they pitched a tent in the side yard ,played out there all day, slept out there last night with a campfire and watched the stars. Trevor was up soooo late last night (still up when I got home from work) that he was really grumpy today. Josh also took the training wheels off Trevor's Spiderman bike and has been helping him try to ride (I think it's going to be a while longer for that milestone). We took all the kids to the beach today, so it was really cold and windy, so after a short walk we left and went home. How dissapointing. Tommorrow we leave for Storyland and I'm really looking forward to getting away for a few days, it will feel like a real vacation! More soon and pics to follow....

Lucas is On the Move (5 Months!)
Lucas is 5 months old today and I really feel like life is back to a chaotic normal. I feel like we know and love every square inch of him. He adds so much to our family. He is starting to move! He can rotate and push way up on his arms and push himself along the floor. He definately has his favorite toys and lives to chew on just about anything. He loves to bounce and loves his exersaucer. Most of all he loves being held and cuddled. I love to relax in the black leather chair just holding him while he sleeps, I could stay there all day! Lucas thinks Trevor is really funny and laughs out loud when Trevor spits in the sink after brushing his teeth or jumping on the trampoline. Josh loves to hang Lucas upside down and have Lucas bite his nose-they both laugh it is so cute!

Things only Mommy knows:
Lucas is 5 months old today and I really feel like life is back to a chaotic normal. I feel like we know and love every square inch of him. He adds so much to our family. He is starting to move! He can rotate and push way up on his arms and push himself along the floor. He definately has his favorite toys and lives to chew on just about anything. He loves to bounce and loves his exersaucer. - It helps Lucas fall asleep when you tap his head gently and SHHH him.
- Lucas loves to have two toys in his carseat, his elephant and his rattle
- He rubs his eyes when he is tired and lays his head down on my chest
- He gets really calm right before sleeping
- He sleeps best on a person and second in the swing.

Today
Today I had to work early morning and Josh was super dad taking care of all the kids until noon. It was a wonderful day weather wise so they were able to spend a good part of the day outdoors playing. Some of our fun memories are:

Family Farm Fun
Today was Trevor's last day of Farm camp and we got to go explore the farm at 2:30. The kids had played Farm Olympics and were eating popsicles and getting their awards when we arrived. Then we all split up and explored the farm. Trevor showed us how to catch a duckling and what to feed "luke skywalker" the bunny. Lily, Breanna, and Lucas were all with us and they loved watching the ducks as well. We had some delicious chocolate zucchini cake that the kids had made and then headed home. Vacation has begun!!! Trevor can't wait to go back to farm camp next year. We are so proud of him! Enjoy the pictures:)

A Day with Lily
If there are children in this world that I love as much as my own they are my nieces and nephews. Today I got to spend the whole day watching my 2 year old niece Lily. She had a tough time at first but soon warmed up to me and even clung to me for reassurance at the end of the afternoon. She is just an absolute doll and what a smartie! Lily and Breanna had an absolute blast at lunchtime making up jibberish words and then laughing at each other. It was so cute! I can't wait to spend time with the family when all the kids are together over the next few weeks. This will be one of the best times of my life:)

Day 2
Day two of camp went well, Trevor was a little more tired today and ALOT more tired when he got home. The day seems long for him so it's hard for him to tell me everything they did (I wish I could be there along with him). Today I know they got to hold a ducking, and the duckling was very "squirmy". They also took a hike in the woods and got wet in a puddle. He also came home with some paint on his arms so I guess they painted. He ate every drop of his lunch and snacks-it must have been a really busy day. I miss my little guy, I've only seen him for about 30 mins a day for the past two days. I can't wait until Friday when they invite us all to the farm in the afternoon for some family fun! Then Josh will officially be on vacation! Jeff and Irene have arrived safely. I can't wait to get home from work to meet baby Emma (if they are not sleeping). A little birdie told me that Lily had been up for 19 straight hours-YIKES!

The First Day
The first day of camp went really well. The day went by so fast! Despite it being rainy and a little dreary, my little guy did great! He said he wasn't sad at all when I left and he was just excited. They fed pigs and collected eggs. They saw a mommy and a baby cow. He did fine with his own lunch. He met two new little friends. The cutest thing was that Breanna was just beside herself that her brother was gone for the day. She gave Trevor a huge hug when he got home. He can't wait to go back tommorrow! :)

Farm Camp

Trevor is all ready for camp! He was so excited this morning and kept asking me how long it was going to be until we got to leave. I must admit I was a little emotional after the drop off. I looked back and saw him standing there watching my car drive away. I just wanted to run back and hug him. On the other hand, I am excited for him venturing off on his own. I know he is going to have a great time at camp. He has such a quiet confidence in himself. They had some baby ducks out for us to look at when we were dropping off. Breanna was thrilled and was yelling, "DUCKY!" at the top of her lungs. I miss Trevor already. Only one lucnh to make at home today. I miss having someone at home to talk to all day.

Our mission is to expose 4 - 9 year-old children to where their food comes from and to educate them about sustainable living and farm ecology. Kids are taught the principals of animal welfare and organic gardening, and experience the satisfaction of good work for good food. Farm Camp nurtures children's natural inclination to connect with nature, the outdoors, animals and all living things. Through creative play and exploration, we want children to develop a knowledge, love and respect for locally produced food from small farms. Farm campers are the next generation of consumers and farmers; we want them to be inspired. We want to share the gifts of open space with the children of the community that made the preservation of this farm possible.
The Farm Camp Program allows campers to experience all the workings of a small, organic, diversified farm. They learn how a seed can sprout and grow into a nutritious and delicious vegetable. They learn the basic needs of raising their own ducklings and chicks and get to watch them grow over the course of the summer. Pigs, lambs, rabbits, turkeys and laying hens are all part of a camper’s experience at the farm. Campers will participate in farm chores such as weeding, picking potato bugs, collecting eggs, feeding the pigs, and planting seedlings. Age-specific groups will take walks in the woods, learn about farm and forest ecology, collect salamanders and frogs, do craft projects with farm goods such as wool, eggs and super large zucchinis, and learn how good local, organic farm raised food can be through simple cooking projects. We’ll play and read and dig in the dirt and come home asking for snap peas and carrots for dinner. Campers have access to their own garden, chickens, ducks, and rabbits, in addition to the farm’s other livestock.
Farm Camp is directed by Stacy Brenner, who has been a farmer for 6 seasons and a mother for 11 seasons. Stacy helped create and develop Farm Camp at Turkey Hill Community Farm in Cape Elizabeth , the community farm she and her husband John started in 2004 prior to moving to Scarborough . She is accompanied by a talented staff of counselors who have a variety of backgrounds in social work, environmental education and early childhood work. Each counselor also comes with a working knowledge of sustainable farming practices and a philosophy consistent with our camp mission. Farm Camp curriculum comes from 2 previous successful years of camp at Turkey Hill Farm and from work by our talented counselors. These folks make Farm Camp possible.
Each week concludes with a family and friends gathering Friday afternoon to enjoy a taste of simple, delicious garden food prepared by the children. The campers will display their art and share their knowledge of farming and foods with a gallery display of camper art and a performance. These Friday gatherings are a great way to meet other families, tour the farm with the best guide available…your camper…and watch as they delight in bringing food from the garden to the plate. We encourage families to take time to explore the woods, streams and farm operation. And of course…a moment to dip your toes into the icy waters of Fogg Brook after a long week at work….a farmer favorite!

Hiking
Today, the weather was absoultely perfect. in the upper 70's and low humidity. I wish the weather could be like this everyday of my life. We decided to drive up to L.L. Bean to get Trevor some new hiking boots for farm camp. We also bought a book listing kid friendly hikes in Maine, NH and Vermont. Nearby is Wolfe's Neck Farm State Park which has alot of kid friendly hiking trails. We hiked about 2 miles along the ocean and river, it was so fun! It was Lucas' first hike, and my first time carrying a child on my back. It was hard, b/c the pack was heavy and it hurt my back, but I managed. 2 miles was good for me! Trevor loves hiking and exploring the woods. He brought his own backpack, waterbottle and binoculars. We are going to do alot more hiking this fall especially as the weather cools down and we can enjoy the foliage. In the evening, we came home and enjoyed out first local corn-on-the-cob and finished up with a campfire. It was a great day. Enjoy the Pics!

Getting Ready
Over the next few days we will be preparing for Jeff, Irene. Lily and Emma to be staying with us for most of August while they transition their home from Germany back to Virginia. I'm so excited with their visit. While it will be so busy with 5 kids 5 and under, we are going to have a blast. I, especially excited that all 8 cousins will be at Trevor's 5th birthday party next weekend. What a blessing to have everyone together. Trevor says he wants a Power Ranger, Spiderman and Pirate party. How will I accomplish that?

Packing a Lunch
Tommorrow, Trevor starts Farm camp for the week. It is from 9-3 everyday this week. It will be a great warm up for the Kindegarten day. Trevor has never been away from us that long-exept the few hours a week of prescool, he has pretty much been with either Josh or I since birth. I'm going to miss my little guy, we have been having a blast together this summer. He is such a good little helper. Tonight I packed what would be my very first lunch for him. My stomach was in knots, I'm just not ready to let go yet.....

These Shelves
The other day when I was nursing Lucas on the toyroom couch I thought about these shelves. This toyroom has fancy molding and was built to be a dining room. I though of what these shelves may hold when my children are grown-linens? china? Glassware? How will this dining room change as my kids change? I always will want to remember them this way-filled with toys, books, games, puzzles and things to discover. The growth chart that we scratched onto the side of one, I wonder how I will feel when I look at that 10 or 20 years from now....Oh, the memories:)
